The bcl-2 antibody is suitable for the detection of this oncoprotein in normal and abnormal tissues. In normal lymphoidal tissue the antibody reacts with B lymphocytes in the mantle zone, whereas in the germinal centre very few cells are stained. In follicular lymphoma bcl-2 is over-expressed and the staining pattern may be used for differentiation from follicular hyperplasia, which are almost bcl-2 negative. Bcl-2 oncoprotein is a protein, which is localized on the inner membrane of mitochondria and on the endoplasmatic reticulum. It is an inhibitor of apoptosis. In the majority of follicular lymphoma translocation of the bcl-2 occurs, followed by deregulation of protein synthesis. Human bcl-2 oncoprotein .
